Is Everything

This book uses a term you will not find in any theological dictionary: LAM. Look At Me. It is the act of performing your Light rather than inhabiting it — converting a lived experience into content for an audience before the experience is finished.

The sunrise is happening. It is genuinely luminous, specifically beautiful, the kind of morning that your Light recognizes immediately as the Creator's handwriting in the margins of an ordinary day. And before it is over — before the light has finished doing what it was doing to your consciousness — the phone is in your hand and the photo is taken and the caption is being composed and the moment has become a post.

You have left the sunrise and entered LAM. The sunrise is still happening. You are no longer in it.

LAM is not dishonesty. The sunrise was real. The beauty was genuine. The impulse to share it was human and understandable. LAM is simply the specific, Shadow-driven compulsion to convert the living of your life into the performance of it — for an audience you are simultaneously dependent on and exhausted by. And here is what that compulsion costs you: the moment you shift from experiencing your life to performing it, you have left I AM and entered LAM. You cannot fully inhabit both at once. I AM requires your complete interior presence. LAM requires at least half of that presence to be directed outward, managing the impression.

The practice is not to stop taking photographs. The practice is to finish watching the sunrise first.

There is a sound the monitor makes at 2am when our son's blood sugar drops below a threshold. You learn to wake to that sound the way you learn to wake to your infant's cry — completely, immediately, from the deepest sleep, with the specific adrenaline of a parent whose child needs something right now.

You go to him. You check the number. You calculate. You treat. You wait for the number to come up. You check again. You lie back down in the dark and wait for your body to stop running on emergency and remember that it is 3am and you have to work tomorrow.

The framework in this book does not make this better. The morning practice does not touch it. The revision practice cannot reach it — there is nothing to revise, nothing to reimagine as different, nothing to release. It is simply there.

What the practice gives me — what I can honestly say it gives me, on the mornings when it is working — is a different quality of presence to the unresolved. The ability to sit with what cannot be changed without the Shadow turning it into a verdict about the Creator's attention or my worthiness or the fairness of the world.

That is real. It is not resolution. It is something more honest than resolution: the capacity to remain in the conversation even when the conversation includes this. Some mornings better than others. That is the honest account.
